Lemon oils are amongst the highest volume and most frequently traded of flavor fragrance essential oils. Citronellal citral considered key components responsible for lemon note with (neral + geranial) preferred. Of myriad sources citral, Australian myrtaceous tree, Myrtle, Backhousia citriodora F. Muell. (Myrtaceae), is superior. This review examines history, natural occurrence, cultivation, taxonomy, chemistry, biological activity, toxicology, standardisation commercialisation especially in relation to its oil.
